Workplace loneliness report

How can we design loneliness out of the workplace?

In 2019, a group of organisations including Lendlease, Buro Happold, British Red Cross and Collectively, worked together to gather insights into workplace loneliness. The group conducted workshops in various work spaces and commissioned Professor Nigel Oseland to run a survey of workplace conditions that lead to connection. Over 500 people shared their insights on how office design can influence how we feel and act at work.

A staggering 42% of people say they have no friends at work - yet this is the place where we spend a third of our lives. Research shows that building a sense of belonging at work is vital for our wellbeing, productivity and loyalty to an organisation.

The research was shared with at a cross-industry workshop, where organisations shared ideas for tackling loneliness. The insights and ideas are captured in this progress report.
